# Zakat in debt

## Question

What is the condition of zakat, if we have some amount of debt? Also have buisness, shops( given for rent, but now nothing due to lockdown) and some acres of lands.

## Answer / Fatwa Ruling

Debt which has to be repaid will not be an obstacle to paying Zakat. Zakat should be paid on rent which is advance deposit for the shop and also on merchandise after one year. If the land purchased for sale is still intended for sale, Zakat should be paid at the rate of two and a half percent of its value after one year. Zakat is not to be paid if the sale is not intended.
